OR-Gov: Saxton's scary ad

Thu Oct 05, 2006 at 03:20:42 PM PDT

Ron Saxton's campaign has come under fire by the Oregon attorney general's office for basically lying in a campaign ad, saying that Ted lets illegal immigrants vote.

The voiceover in the ad in question states:

"under Ted Kulongoski, Oregon gives drivers' licenses to illegal aliens who use them to get state services, and even vote"

But outside the cocoon of the editing room -- face-to-face with a reporter -- Saxton's staff suddenly ain't so bold.

The deets after the flip...

KATU's Melica Johnson has done a great job covering this and deserves credit for asking tough questions of the Saxton spokesperson, Angela Wilhelms.

You can watch the story she filed, but the best part is this exchange:

Wilhelms: "We don't know what these people are doing with the driver's licenses that they've obtained illegally."
Johnson: "But why draw the conclusion that they are in fact voting?"
Wilhelms: "I'm not going to get into the nuances of the ad."

Excuse me?  Nevermind the "these people" -- the nuances?

Oregon gives drivers' licenses to illegal aliens who use them to get state services, and even vote"

That's about as "nuanced" as a two-by-four to the head.

Johnson: "But why draw the conclusion that they are in fact voting?"

Watch the video -- you can see Wilhelm's face contort as her brain actually breaks under the weight of logic.

She clings to the pre-constructed life preserver of a phrase

"I'm not going to get into the nuances of the ad."

Sigh...

Honey, if you didn't want to get burned, you had no business defending that ad in the first place.
